Anoka’s old Long Line tower

Did I go to Anoka, Indiana, to take pictures of a Long Line site during a blizzard? Yes! Unfortunately, the snow obscured most of the tower and I had to go back. The tower sits just outside of the unincorporated Cass County community and looms over the junction of US-24 and US-35.

AT&T built thousands of microwave relay towers as part of its Long Line communications network. Although they haven’t been used as part of it in nearly forty years, many towers remain standing across Indiana. The tower near Anoka rises 194 feet into the sky1

Originally, the Anoka tower relayed signals from from Burlington, eighteen miles southeast, to another tower in Rochester twenty-one miles northeast2. Unfortunately, the structure no longer features its horn antennae.

After the Long Lines program ended, a successor to AT&T sold most of the towers around the year 2000. Its microwave horns have been removed, but the tower in Anoka is used by Transworld Network Corporation for high-speed internet4.
