North Webster’s M&M Restaurant in a postcard

Read time: 2 min.

I’m not sure how many postcards fit in a two-foot box, but it’s a lot. After my stepdad found his mom’s old collection, I was shocked to find two from tiny North Webster, Indiana! The first was of the old North Webster Motel, which I wrote about here. The second depicted the M&M Restaurant. I’d never heard of the place, so I set out to find whatever I could.

Fred Clark and his wife, Beatrice, moved to North Webster in 19421 and opened the first iteration of the M&M restaurant downtown at 119 North Main Street2. Eventually, the restaurant moved to 756 South Main Street on State Road 133.

Unfortunately, the original building no longer exists. According to the rear of the postcard, though, the new restaurant south of town featured “M&M Char-Broiled Steaks, Prime Rib of Beef, Hoosier Fried Chicken, and Varied Selection of Sea Foods.” That’s my kind of place!

Aside from all the food, the M&M featured a whopping seven dining areas: the Coffee Shop, Family Room, Plantation Room, Fire Side Room, New Orleans Room, Coach Room, and Executive Conference Room. I’ve never heard of such a variety of places to sit and eat before.

The Clarks retired in 1970, and Beatrice died in 1986. Charles passed away the following year4. Fortunately, the M&M building is still standing, as home to American Legion Post 253.
