The older I get, the more I find myself grateful for the small things instead of Thanksgiving’s pageantry and fuss. I’m thankful for the overlooked- the parts of the world that sit just off the shoulder of the road, waiting for someone with a curious streak to pull over and take a picture.

Rest in Peace, Blake Reynolds
Yesterday morning, tragic news cut through my commute as I crossed over I-69 on my way to work. Indiana Public Radio reported that a Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputy had been fatally struck by a semi in the early hours, just four miles up the road. The news was heartbreaking on its own, but the weight of it didn’t land until later, when I learned the victim’s name: it was Blake Reynolds, an old friend and bandmate of mine.

It was about half a lifetime ago that my inner history geek stirred awake for good. After long nights working at Subway or the call center, my friends and I would pile into my car, grab fountain pops and cigarettes from the RIggin Road Market, and set off down the backroads in search of something, though we never could have said what. Old bridges? Forgotten schoolhouses? Flowing wells? We found a lot of those, but perhaps we were pining for the thrill of discovery itself. Those drives were our escape, our rebellion, and, in many ways, the start of everything I do now.

Out of a lifetime of bad decisions, probably the worst one I ever made was to start smoking fifteen years ago. Smoking sucks! Fortunately, I think I’ve come to the end of the era. As I write this, I’m trying to suck down my last pack of cigarettes while on vacation in Tennessee.

I don’t find myself at Subway very often these days. After working there through high school and college, I’m still a little burnt out on that unmistakable aroma- a mix I’ve come to conclude combined fresh bread, banana peppers, and onions. A couple of weeks ago, though, I caved and grabbed a Chicken Bacon Ranch with Chipotle Southwest sauce for lunch with a friend. It took a single bite -and that smell- to get my mind to wander! I suddenly remembered one of the Subway shops I used to frequent back in high school, and recalled it had quietly closed its doors.

Today marks three years since I hit the publish button on my very first blog post here. Some celebrations are in order! A lot of life has happened in that time: I adopted Zulu the cat. I took my first vacation in years. I stepped into a leadership role as editor of the Delaware County Historical Society’s quarterly newsletter and board. I earned a promotion at work.

Back in May, I wrote about how I was entering a Bipolar II depressive episode. What I didn’t know then was just how long and deep it would be. The past four months felt like quicksand, with every day pulling me deeper thanks to the weight of the depression. Recently, though, it seems like something has changed. Morning temperatures have slipped into the forties, the PSL is back, and I’m beginning to stagger out from one of the darkest stretches I’ve ever faced.

We’ve officially made it past the halfway mark of 2025, and I’ve got some fun news to share: this blog has already outpaced last year’s views and readership by a wide margin. I’m stunned that so many of you have found my oddball fascinations worth a click! Still, in the spirit of a good, old-fashioned pledge drive, I figured it was time for a quick update on your generous support. We can address the tote bags later.

This blog has always been about chasing down the places that spark my curiosity and finding out everything I can about them. Most recently, I’ve discovered that my daily commute from Muncie to Anderson is packed with sites to absorb! I’ve spotted several that made me reach for my phone and snap a quick photo, so here are seven hasty shots of buildings I haven’t written about yet.

I spent a lot of time wrestling with labels during my latest bout with Bipolar II disorder. They can be exhausting! Between diagnoses, personality types, and even the roles we take on, each feels like a tidy box that rarely fits the full mess of being human.
