Center Township’s Orphans’ Home schoolhouse in Delaware County

The site of the Delaware County Orphans’ Home was sold to the county for $3,300 on October 19, 1882 by George W. Franklin1. In 1882, the Delaware County Commissioners spent $1,450 to erect buildings and make repairs to the Delaware County Children’s Home at the site2. There is some corroboration that the Orphan’s Home schoolhouse was established sometime after 18853.

Center Township’s Moore/Water Works schoolhouse in Delaware County

As early as 1874, a Center Township schoolhouse that served District 5 stood on the land of Parker Moore southeast of Muncie on the Burlington Pike1. Initially, the school took on the landowner’s last name. Later on, Parker Moore lent his name to a cemetery and an iron bridge near where East Memorial Drive crosses the White River.
