I was diagnosed with Bipolar II disorder almost a decade and a half ago during my freshman year of college. Some tiring stressors since the Fourth of July weekend had me wondering if I was careening toward a depressive phase again, which meant it was time to whip out the coping mechanisms! One of my favorites is pretty ridiculous: I blurt out the name of a neighborhood in a stupid voice every time I speed past.

Salem Township’s Center schoolhouse in Delaware County

The first school established on what later became the site of Salem Township’s District 7 was built on Henry Miller’s land during the winter of 1833-34. It was a log building with a puncheon floor, stick-and-mud-chimney, and wide fireplace. The school burned soon after it was built but was replaced by a nearly-identical structure1.

Exploring State Road 32 between Muncie and Anderson on my birthday

I must be getting old. I can’t think of a better way to commemorate my 32nd birthday than continuing my examinations of the old highway alignments that once connected the cities of Muncie and Anderson in East Central Indiana! With my newfound age in mind, let’s focus on two discontiguous old alignments of Indiana State Road 32 in Madison County. Though we can quibble on specific boundaries, the highway spans about twelve miles from the western edge of Muncie to the east side of Anderson. The two discontinued alignments in Madison County measure around 3.5 miles.

An old alignment of Indiana State Road 67 near Daleville

I’ve been hooked on exploring the old roads ever since I was fourteen and stumbled across a residential cul-de-sac that once carried Indiana State Road 67 from Anderson towards Muncie. I’ve never really written about them, but the back roads between the two cities have basically been my back yard for the past thirty years! This bypassed part of State Road 67 once connected them.
