Many Delaware County residents know about the stone marker that commemorates Union Township’s District 2 schoolhouse in northern Delaware County. It’s stood at the corner of County Roads 1200-North and 200-East since 19491! Fewer probably realize that they’ve driven past the old schoolhouse as well: if my research is correct, it sits about a third of a mile east of the monument.

Union Township’s Center schoolhouse in Delaware County
Delaware County’s Union Township was divided into unique school districts in 18371 in an arrangement made fourteen years before Indiana established funding for a system of common schools2. In 1882, William Cox granted the township a portion of his land at the corner of Center and Eaton-Wheeling Pike to build a schoolhouse3.

John W. Vincent entered into section 27 of Delaware County in 18361. It’s unclear when the first schoolhouse on his land was built, but it was probably prior to the state passing a law providing resources for a free, common school system in 18522.
