New Castle’s Marsh supermarket on Fourteenth Street opened in 1958. It was remodeled in 1973 and closed in 2016. Recently, the empty building was converted into a church.

Abandonded Marsh: Union City, Ohio
The Marsh supermarket in Union City, Ohio, opened as Wright’s IGA. Marsh purchased the grocery in 1987 and operated it for thirty years. In 2017, Sutton’s Foods of Arcanum operated a supermarket in the building. It closed two years later.

I left out a Village Pantry when I wrote about the distinct design eras of Marsh Supermarkets’ convenience stores last week. The company built a “Spanish Mission1” location in 1970! As far as I know, it’s the only one ever designed in that style.

The Marsh Supermarket on Greyhound Pass in Westfield-Carmel opened in 1991 as one of the company’s most ornate stores. It closed in 2017. The building was renovated in 2023 and is in the process of becoming Academy Sports + Outdoors.

The Marsh Supermarket on East McGalliard Road in Muncie was opened in 1969 with a design typical of stores from that era. It closed in 2013. If you couldn’t tell from its color scheme, the store is home to a Planet Fitness today.

Central Indiana’s Marsh Supermarkets opened a new grocery on North Broadway in Anderson in 1980. The store closed in 2017 in the months leading up to the company’s bankruptcy. Today, the building is home to a Storage of America facility, along with a neighboring Kmart that closed the same year.

The Marsh on Forest Avenue in Marion’s Northgate Shopping Center opened in 1960. The company first remodeled the building in the 1980s before changing the layout again in 2005 to closer resemble its new “Lifestyle” supermarkets like the one in Fort Wayne. Fresh Encounter, an Ohio grocer, purchased the building out of bankruptcy in 2017. Today, it’s a Needler’s Fresh Market.
