Wheeling, New Wheeling, and the CI&E Railroad

Indiana University says that nearly two-thirds of the 23 million acres that make up Indiana is farmland1. As much as we’re known for corn and soybeans, that wasn’t always the case: pioneers clear cut enormous swaths of forest down in the years after they arrived here, which means tree lines that seem random to us in 2023 are usually anything but! One stretch, visible from Old US-35 in northern Delaware County, hides an old alignment of the Chicago, Indiana & Eastern Railway. New rail during the gas boom meant big money for any town on its path, and the line’s completion convinced an entire community to try and reorganize itself nearly a mile west of where it stood.

Exploring State Road 32 between Muncie and Anderson on my birthday

I must be getting old. I can’t think of a better way to commemorate my 32nd birthday than continuing my examinations of the old highway alignments that once connected the cities of Muncie and Anderson in East Central Indiana! With my newfound age in mind, let’s focus on two discontiguous old alignments of Indiana State Road 32 in Madison County. Though we can quibble on specific boundaries, the highway spans about twelve miles from the western edge of Muncie to the east side of Anderson. The two discontinued alignments in Madison County measure around 3.5 miles.

An old alignment of Indiana State Road 67 near Daleville

I’ve been hooked on exploring the old roads ever since I was fourteen and stumbled across a residential cul-de-sac that once carried Indiana State Road 67 from Anderson towards Muncie. I’ve never really written about them, but the back roads between the two cities have basically been my back yard for the past thirty years! This bypassed part of State Road 67 once connected them.
