In 1874, Washington Township’s District 9 schoolhouse was listed at the southeast corner of Wheeling Pike and the Shideler Free Pike1 in Delaware County, just west of what was later the community of Stockport2. As late as 1973, an old frame store later converted into a dwelling3 stood on the same site.

Knox Township’s Goodwill schoolhouse in Jay County
In 1881, a schoolhouse sat on land owned by the Sawyer family between Mud Creek and an angling pike that no longer exists in Knox Township1. By 1887, the building was designated as the township’s District 42. Eventually, it became colloquially known as the “Goodwill” schoolhouse3.

An old schoolhouse just has to be prominent in order for the road it sits on to be named after it. After more than a century, Duck Creek Township’s old Reeder School still stands at the southeast corner of Indiana State Route 13 and the Reeder School Road, also known as West County Road 1400-North. Though it’s been covered in siding, its t-shaped layout is still identifiable as a schoolhouse: originally, it featured a central entry hallway flanked by two cloakrooms that led into the classroom.

It’s said that the Harrison Township’s District 4: Goodboo schoolhouse took its unusual name from a Native American word meaning “good morning1.” More likely, it took its name from a small community that sprung up in the Godfroy Reserve, an Indian reservation named after Miami chief Francis Godfroy, who was granted land here in 1818. The settlement included homes, a church, a schoolhouse, and a trading post; it was named after an Indian who married one of Godfroy’s daughters2.
