White River Township’s Kabel schoolhouse in Randolph County

Read time: 2 min.

Randolph County’s District 16 school in White River Township was located at the northeast corner of South Indian Trail and West County Road 200-South as early as 18651. Nine years later, it stood at the same site on the land owned by the Maggard family. Its proximity to Philip Kabel’s property gave the school its common name2.

In 1879, a new District 16 schoolhouse was built on the land of S.A. Clayton at the northwest corner of West County Road 100-South and Indian Trail3. The District 16 school closed in 1903, but briefly reopened before it was shuttered for good in 19074. The building was sold two years later.

Apparently, the old schoolhouse was moved across the road to where it now stands as a residence5.
