In Randolph County, Green Township’s first District 2 schoolhouse seems to have been built in 18601. The institution was relocated to State Road 282 at some point after 1882, where it stood on the land of George Wise3.

The school’s colloquial name, Boots, doesn’t have a funny story behind it, although I could dream up several! The building’s common name came from the man who originally deeded the township its land, David W. Boots4.Â
Along with the schoolhouses of Districts 3 and 4, the District 2 school closed in 1911. Its students were sent to Green Township’s consolidated school a mile south, which opened a year earlier. A 1912 lawsuit filed in hope of reopening the Boots schoolhouse was unsuccessful4.Â
Today, the District 2: Boots school is Green Township’s last remaining one-room schoolhouse. It’s currently a home.Â
