White River Township’s Holdeman schoolhouse in Randolph County

Read time: 2 min.

In 1847, officials in White River Township purchased land at the southwest corner of East County Road 300-North and North County Road 100-East to host a schoolhouse they planned for District 21. By 1865, the school had been relocated to the northeast corner of the intersection on land owned by the Holdeman family2.

By 1882, the Huffman family owned the 79.5 acres surrounding the schoolhouse3. Area residents commonly referred to the institution as both Holdeman and Huffman.

Although its patrons filed suit to keep the District 2 schoolhouse open4, the building was shuttered in 1912 so its students could attend the new consolidated McKinley school two-and-a-half miles south of it.

The abandoned schoolhouse was sold two years later5. In 1915, it seems that its purchaser moved the building across the road. Local experts believe It still stands there today, converted into a home6.
