From 1869 through 1872, the first Elm Grove schoolhouse was home to the Elm Grove Christian Church until the congregation erected a purpose-built sanctuary just south 1. The present building was built about nine years after the church moved out2.

The Elm Grove school -along with Prairie, Keller, Closser, Beech Grove, Salem, and Florida- closed in 1932 after the six-room Leach consolidated school was erected about a mile north3.
The abandoned schoolhouse was eventually acquired by Mr. and Mrs. Sidney E. Shelton, who remodeled the building into a home4. It remains a home today.
