It was still snowing when I went to Burrows, Indiana, to take photos of a Long Line tower. I could barely see the thing, so I had to go back! It’s been decades since the monolith has been used for its original purpose, but it’s still a striking sight in this countryside community.

Sixty and seventy years ago, AT&T built thousands of microwave towers as part of its transcontinental communications network. Burrows’ appears to have been built in 19631. Rising 245 feet2, it relayed a signal thirteen miles southeast from Burlington to another tower twenty-four miles northwest in Monon3. Today, the tower retains its fan-shaped KS-15676 horn antennae and an Andrews SHX10A.

After the Long Lines program ended, a successor to AT&T sold the tower in 2006. Today, it’s operated by WATCH Communications4. A modern communications tower stands just north.
