AT&T built thousands of microwave relay towers as part of its Long Line communications network. Although they haven’t been used as part of it in nearly forty years, many towers remain standing across Indiana. One looms over the north side of Kokomo.
The tower in Kokomo must have been a late arrival to AT&T’s Long Lines network. Apparently, it was built in 19871. Rising 268 feet2, it relayed a signal from the central office in Kokomo, a mile and a half southeast, to another sixteen miles west in Burlington3. Unfortunately, the tower no longer features its horn antennae.
After the Long Lines program ended, AT&T sold the tower in 20044. Today, it’s still operated by the company5.
