I rolled out a schoolhouse index back in April of last year. I was surprised by how many people told me they use my blog to help with their research, and a few mentioned that they wished there was an easier way to find my schoolhouse posts. There are a lot! To help, I slapped together a simple index that I’ve done a terrible job of keeping current. I’m happy to say that it’s up to date for the time being. 

I’ve been to 232 one- and two-room schoolhouses in East-Central Indiana. I think I’ve cleared all of them in Blackford, Delaware, Hamilton, Hancock, Madison, and Randolph Counties, and I’ve been to a handful in Grant, Jay, and Wayne. At first, I set out to update my index whenever I posted about a new one. Unfortunately, I haven’t done it. Rather, I’ve updated it in marathons whenever I feel guilty about letting the index lag. 

Fortunately, the schoolhouse index is easy. To use it, click on the township in whatever county you’re looking for. A list of schoolhouses should pop up. Sometimes, the list will say I haven’t been to a schoolhouse in that township yet. That’s either because I legitimately haven’t, or it’s because there aren’t any schools there anymore. Phase two of the schoolhouse index will clarify that. 

In the meantime, I’m happy that the index is updated. I’d have liked to flood this blog with every schoolhouse I’d ever been to as a database early on, but I decided to schedule posts out instead. Because of that, some of the schoolhouses I’ve been to won’t appear in the index until I’ve posted about them. I think I’ve finally moved everything over from my old schoolhousery blog, but if you’re a researcher looking for something I haven’t, please let me know. I’ll be happy to cut the line with the information you crave!
