Henry County’s old Lewisville schoolhouse

Read time: < 1 min.

The first schoolhouse in the Henry County community of Lewisville was a log cabin built on land donated by a Mr. Freeman1. The building was moved several times before its replacement, the extant structure, was erected in 1893. The new school faced west and originally featured a two-tiered open belfry2.

The brick Lewisville schoolhouse only operated for twenty years before it was replaced by a $20,000 Franklin Township High School in 19133. Fifteen years later, the high school received a $53,000 addition that consisted of a gymnasium, auditorium, and five classrooms4

The 1893 schoolhouse outlasted its successor, which was demolished after its students consolidated into Tri High School. Today, with some modifications, the old school is a bed and breakfast known as Newhouse Family Inn.
