Graysville’s old Long Line Tower

Read time: 2 min.

AT&T built thousands of microwave relay towers as part of its Long Line communications network in the 50s and 60s. Although they haven’t been used in nearly forty years, many remain standing across Indiana. One still stands outside of the Sullivan County community of Graysville.

The Graysville tower appears to have been erected in 19551. It reaches 282 feet tall2. During its AT&T days, its KS-15676 horn antennae relayed a signal from Terre Haute, twenty-three miles northeast, to Freedom, twenty-eight miles southeast3.

After the Long Lines program ended, AT&T deaccessioned most of its towers around the year 2000. Since 2005, the tower near Graysville has been operated by Western Indiana Rural Energy Corporation4
