Spotted in the wild: another old Village Pantry in Yorktown, believe it or not

Read time: 2 min.

In 1966, Marsh Supermarkets shook up Indiana’s retail scene by diving into the booming convenience store market. Fast forward forty years, and the company had grown its Village Pantry chain to 154 locations across Indiana and Ohio. Many of the oldest stores have since found new purposes, but whenever I spot one on the road, I make it a point to try and snap a photo.

Yorktown’s first Village Pantry was Marsh’s eighteenth. Although most of its earliest stores were designed by architect George Cox1, Yorktown’s was part of a 9,000-square-foot strip mall2. Along with a Bonnet Drug store that relocated from 123 Smith Street, the Pantry opened in 19703. A Clark station arrived next door shortly thereafter.

The Village Pantry at 2 Adaline Street closed in 1985 after a larger store was built at 9021 West Smith Street. The replacement was the second in the chain to feature booths for sit-down eating and featured an upgraded deli and gasoline islands4. Bonnet Drug persisted until 1988 when Donald and Mary Ann Bonnet sold the store to Rite-Aid5. The building became home to the Yorktown Library in 20006. It took its present appearance after an expansive renovation in 20217
