Fall Creek Township’s old Mechanicsburg schoolhouse in Henry County

Read time: 2 min.

I’ll admit that I don’t know as much about the old schoolhouse in Mechanicsburg as I’d like. Still, one thing’s certain: the building is a rare find. A two-story, one-room schoolhouse is an outlier in East Central Indiana, and a structure like this deserves some kind of presence online! Today, I’m clicking “publish” in hopes that someone with more knowledge can fill in the gaps. If you know anything about Henry County’s old Mechanicsburg school, I’d love to hear about it.

The unincorporated community of Mechanicsburg was platted in 1858 as the only settlement in Henry County not established on a railroad after its arrival. The village took its name from the number of mechanics -tradesmen- who lived there1. Correspondingly, Mechanicsburg thrived with industry: a woolen factory, grist mill, and sawmill once stood along Deer Creek! Unfortunately, nothing remains of those enterprises today2

Mechanicsburg’s first school was built in 18543. The county assessor’s office says the present two-story structure was built in 19004 because, of course it does: 1900 is a common “fill-in” date for many old buildings. In reality, the extant schoolhouse was built in 1887 if the block above its front door is to be believed.

The Mechanicsburg schoolhouse wasn’t just a place of learning. It also housed the Mechanicsburg Lodge No. 392 of Free and Accepted Masons. I believe they met in a hall on the second floor5. Although the school closed after the 1946-47 term6, the Masonic lodge carried on for years afterward.

County tax records indicate that the Masons sold the building about five years ago7. Today, the old Mechanicsburg school appears to be a home.
