The well at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery is flowing again, in case you were curious

Read time: 2 min.

The flowing well at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in rural Delaware County is downright melodramatic, more so than any other I know. Sometimes, it gushes away like a champ! On other days, it practically seems dead. The well refused to flow when I stopped by back in February, but I was pleased to find water pouring out yesterday. If you want to fill a jug, now’s your chance!

The spigot at Mt. Pleasant Church Cemetery was only the second flowing well I ever stumbled across. It sits at the foot of the graveyard’s hill, a full twenty-four feet below the sanctuary that watches over it from above. Deep underground, water trapped between layers of rock extends into the hillside under pressure. The old gas well casing taps into it and cracked after the gas went away. Because of that, the water rises on its own! It surges upward and spills out as the liquid tries to find its natural level.

At least, that’s what it does when it feels like cooperating. The Mt. Pleasant well has always struck me as temperamental-c hurch officials reportedly shut it off for a period during the 1980s1, but it seems to operate according to its own whims ever since I’ve known of it.

When I visited in 2021, it was pouring out with the force of a strong kitchen faucet. By March of 2025, it was bone dry. Still, it flowed again a month later! Then it dried up once more in February. It wasn’t quite flowing at full strength yesterday, but the water was there. At least it’s still alive.

If you want to check the flowing well at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery out for yourself while you still can, its address is 4101 South Highbanks Road in Daleville. The well sits just south of the northeastern entrance to the graveward.

  1. Is the water potable?

I suspect you’re already aware of it, but if you aren’t there’s a well south of state road 81 between Dunkirk and Patterson, Ohio.
