Yorktown-based Marsh Supermarkets entered the booming, burgeoning convenience store market back in 1966. Fast-forward forty years, and they’d built a network of 154 Village Pantries across Indiana and Ohio! Many of the oldest have found second or third lives as something new, and I try to snap a quick photo whenever I drive past one.

Abandoned Marsh: Crosspoint Boulevard in Fishers
Marsh Supermarkets relocated its headquarters from Yorktown to Fishers, Indiana, in 1991. The four-story building some referred to as the “Marsh Mahal” sat on thirteen acres and was put up for sale in 2017. Today, it’s home to a co-working space.

Back in 1966, Yorktown-based Marsh Supermarkets made a bold move by jumping headfirst into the booming convenience store market. Four decades later, their bet paid off- Village Pantry had grown into a 154-store chain stretching across Indiana and Ohio! These days, many of the original locations have been repurposed into second or even third lives. Each carries a part of Marsh’s legacy with them, and I can’t resist snapping a photo.

Marsh Supermarkets opened its sprawling $6 million perishables warehouse in Yorktown in 1982. The company closed the warehouse in 2016. Recently, the building was home to Black Gold Farms, a potato grower.

The Marsh Supermarket on Main Street in Hamilton, Ohio was built in 1956. It closed in 2013. After Marsh was shuttered, the building briefly became home to TapouT Fitness. Today, it’s Bargain Hunt.

Marsh Supermarkets opened its Trios di Tuscanos restaurant in front of the company’s store at 14450 Mundy Drive in 2004. The restaurant shared space with McNamara Florists and copied the aesthetic of the company’s new lifestyle stores. Unfortunately, it closed in 2006. Today, the site is home to CVS.

The Marsh Supermarket at East Washington Street and German Church Road opened around 1993 and closed twenty-three years later. The building sat vacant for several years before it was remodeled to house Affordable Family Storage. Today, it’s home to CubeSmart Storage.

Marsh Supermarkets acquired the Cox Food Market at 2200 Park Road in 2003 to operate it as part of its LoBill Foods division. The store closed in 2011. Today, after a renovation, part of the building is home to Tractor Supply Co.

The O’Malia’s supermarket in Carmel’s Meridian Village opened in 1990. Marsh purchased the chain in 2001. The store closed in 2010 after its lease expired. Today, the building is home to Godby Furniture.
