I wasn’t sure that Fall Creek Township’s Lukens schoolhouse still existed. The Madison County Historian didn’t think it did either, but I found compelling testimony from someone who lived there as a child that made me believe the building was still standing in truncated form. If I’m right, what’s left of the old schoolhouse no longer resembles one.

Take out a ruler and hold your fingers an inch apart. That’s how close I was to seeing Fall Creek Township’s old Mendon schoolhouse in southern Madison County! Unfortunately, the building was demolished in August 2021. Its lintel was still visible near its neatly-graded footprint when I visited on the nineteenth. The bulldozer was still sitting there!

An earlier District 1 school in Green Township was established just northeast of where it sits today. In 1880, it was located at the northeastern corner of West County Road 1000-South and Indiana State Road 13 on farmland owned by the Cotterell family1.

After a new state constitution authorized funding for free, common schools, Adams Township demolished five old schoolhouses in exchange for ten frame buildings that were soon erected to take their place1. The District 10 schoolhouse was one of them2.

Indiana State Road 38 transects Fall Creek Township just outside of Pendleton. It’s nearly in line with what was once called the New Castle and Lafayette State Road, which opened in the 1830s1. Before it was designated as a state highway, the thoroughfare was an old wagon trail that ran through an area called Spring Valley. You’d be hard-pressed to find it, but there’s a schoolhouse there.
