Last month was rough for railcar spotting. Thanks to bad weather, I spent most of it stuck indoors. Fortunately, March more than made up for things: the skies cleared, the tracks stayed busy, and I managed to spot not just a few, but ten standout pieces of graffiti outside. Welcome to the twentieth edition of railcar spotting!

Railcar spotting: February, 2025
February has been miserable outside. Isn’t it always? The cold and wind have kept me from venturing into the rail yard at work, but a few graffiti-covered cars have rolled in and parked within view of my office. Last Friday, I drove along the line and snapped photos of four that caught my eye. This post is a short one, but welcome to another edition of railcar spotting! Here’s hoping March brings better weather and more to see.

I was not at all excited to go back to work after eleven days off over the holidays. Aside from getting my blog caught up through the end of the month, it felt like I didn’t get anything accomplished! Still, with temperatures expected to plummet, the first thing I did once back in the office was throw my coat back on and head out to the rail yard to explore. Welcome to another edition of railcar spotting!

Snapping iPhone photos of the most interesting railcars we receive at work started as a casual exercise. Many months later, it’s turned into a full-fledged series! I’ve posted pictures of 122 tags since I began sharing my finds back in 2023! Over the past few weeks, I revisited them all and reflected on the incredible variety and creativity that rolled through the yard this year. Narrowing them down wasn’t easy, but here are ten favorites that made 2024 so memorable.

I thought November brought a real chill to the air, but it’s been downright cold this past month. I expected that, of course, so the icy winds didn’t keep me from wandering into the rail yard at work in hopes of uncovering fresh graffiti. Twelve months and countless cars into railcar spotting now, here we are at the final monthly edition of the year.

November brought a frosty turn to the weather here in Indiana just in time for Thanksgiving. It’s officially hoodie or quarter-zip season whenever I head out to the railyard! Unfortunately, my visit this time was brief since there wasn’t much to miss. Like the calm before Thursday’s holiday feast, it turned out to be a quiet month for railcar spotting.

I work at a plastics factory that receives most of its material by rail. Every month, I go out to the yard and share the best graffiti I find. Welcome to the fifteenth edition of railcar spotting! I’ve got six photos to add to the collection.

I thought the yard at work would be awash in colorful railcars this month, but I was wrong. For some reason, the ones we received were unusually clean! Only five managed to catch my eye, but that’s still plenty for the 15th edition of my railcar spotting series. So far, I’ve shared 105 of my favorite tags, and five new finds are about to join the collection! Welcome to the September, 2024, edition of railcar spotting.

I’m the production planner at a factory that receives most of our material by railcar. Every month, I venture out into the yard and take pictures of my favorite graffiti. I never thought this would turn into a series, but I’ve shared a hundred tags since May of 2023! Welcome to the thirteenth edition of railcar spotting.

I’m a little sorry to say that railcar spotting for June was a low-key affair. Only eight new pieces of graffiti made the cut! Despite that, one was a real show-stopper and two more provided a great surprise. The yard’s been quiet as we head into the summer months, but welcome to another edition of railcar spotting!
