The rail yard at work was bleak, blank, and barren from my vantage point through most of the new year. After a mild start, things turned miserable during January’s third week! I knew I’d have to plod around in freezing windchills to find decent graffiti inside the yard, so I ran out just as the subzero forecasts came in. My trip didn’t reveal a lot, but what I found was diverse.

The best of railcar spotting: 2023

I started taking iPhone photos of the most interesting railcars we receive at work this past May. I never thought it’d lead to a series, but here we are: I’ve shared thirty-nine pictures of graffiti since I started posting about them back in September. I’ve had a chance to look them all over over the past few days, and here are the best of what 2023 had to offer.

December railcar spotting

Traffic in and out of our rail yard at work is finally slowing down as we approach our year-end shutdown. I figured our decreasing shipments would lead to a dormant month of railcar spotting, but December has proven to be the most colorful on record. I’m glad it was enough to supply the last monthly edition of railcar spotting for 2023!

October railcar spotting

I work at the only factory in my company equipped to send and receive materials by rail. At the risk of sounding like a dweeb, I love seeing all the graffiti as it comes and goes! I’ve shared photos of our incoming railcars occasionally, but last month I predicted that new installments would slow as the year winds down. I was wrong. Railcar spotting continues!
