Ski-Hi memories from after Muncie’s last drive-in closed

Researching and writing about some of Muncie’s old theaters has mostly been fun! The part that sucked was when I realized that, at thirty-two, I’m too young to have seen movies at almost all of the places I’ve written about. I was complaining to my mom about the situation a few days ago when she reminded me that she’d taken us kids to the old Ski-Hi drive-in north of Muncie once when we were little. I don’t remember that occasion, but I do remember exploring the property a few years after it closed. Here are a few photos I took, along with some of the theater’s history.

Hamilton Township’s Shideler schoolhouse in Delaware County

The community of Shideler sprung up in Delaware County around 1870 when the Fort Wayne, Muncie & Cincinnati Railroad was extended through the area. Isaac Shideler, a railroad promotor, opened a store and post office near the station1. As a kid, I was told my family was distantly related to those Hamilton Township fellers, but I’ve been unable to corroborate that as an adult.

Eden Church’s sidewalk to righteousness in Delaware County

“In all thy ways acknowledge him,” directs Proverbs 3:6 in the King James Bible, “and he shall direct thy paths.” A narrow, concrete lane that spans nearly a third of a mile in rural Delaware County proves that members of the Eden United Church of Christ took their verses to heart: Around 1907, the church built a sidewalk to connect the nearest interurban stop to the congregation’s brand-new sanctuary.
