The Koontz flowing well south of Yorktown

I’ve gotten pretty good at finding and identifying flowing wells. After all, identifying them’s easy, so long as you can see the water gushing up from underground! Finding them can be more of a challenge when they’re hidden, but sometimes it’s simple: I had no idea that what I call the Koontz well existed until a friend showed me a picture on his phone and asked, “is this one?” Jackpot! It was, and it sits just south of Yorktown.

Mount Pleasant Township’s Cammack schoolhouse in Delaware County

Mount Pleasant Township’s first schoolhouse, known as Antioch, was built in 1842 as one of the area’s earliest1 after Belleshazer Dragoo deeded a portion of his property for the purpose of erecting a school at the east half of the south east 1/4 of section 17 Township 20 north of Range 82. Andrew Danner was the first teacher there3. In 1879, lumber dealer David Cammack came to the area, establishing a rail station, saw mill, and post office half a mile east of the school4. That year, Sophia Dragoo deeded part of the south quarter of the southwest quarter of Section 3, Township 20, north of Range 9 East to the Mt. Pleasant Township Trustee to establish a schoolhouse5.

Exploring State Road 32 between Muncie and Anderson on my birthday

I must be getting old. I can’t think of a better way to commemorate my 32nd birthday than continuing my examinations of the old highway alignments that once connected the cities of Muncie and Anderson in East Central Indiana! With my newfound age in mind, let’s focus on two discontiguous old alignments of Indiana State Road 32 in Madison County. Though we can quibble on specific boundaries, the highway spans about twelve miles from the western edge of Muncie to the east side of Anderson. The two discontinued alignments in Madison County measure around 3.5 miles.
