Randolph County’s District 9 school was built in 18611. More than a hundred and sixty years later, it still stands on North Main Street in Winchester, just north of West 3rd Street.

In 1870, the schoolhouse was combined with the District 13 school that stood on Greenville Pike east of County Road 125-East2. Three years later, it was removed from the township’s roster and added to Winchester’s school system3. In 1876, a new schoolhouse in Unionport was assigned the building’s vacant district number4.
These days, the old District 9 schoolhouse is a home.

Should say north of W 3rd Street.
Thank you, Howard! I should pay you to be my proofreader. I won’t, but I should!
Well, I know how easy it is to mix up things like the directions when you’re concentrating on what else you want to say and I don’t like to see incorrect info presrved in print. In motorcycling with a leader giving directions for an upcoming turn by radio, it common to mix L or R for the next turn as he’s more thinking about roads, etc.
I’m from Fort Wayne, but have traveled through Randolph and surrounding counties extensively over the past 25 years so the school series has been interesting to me. Thanks for your work.
You’re absolutely right. I really do appreciate it!
