Two artesian wells in Madison County’s Mounds State Park

Mounds State Park has a fascinating history that spans several eras. Not only is it home to ten prehistoric earthworks, but it was also the site of an amusement park from 1897 to 19291! The place is the perfect spot for artesian wells to flourish thanks to its location on a limestone bluff high above the river. So far, I’ve been able to locate two.

Another of Delaware Township’s Albany schoolhouses in Delaware County

Julia Allegre, George Current, and Rhoda Current deeded land to the Delaware School Township on July 15, 18761. Shortly after, the township constructed a two-story, three-bay brick building with a hipped roof and cupola to serve as a schoolhouse. Though originally the schoolhouse at Albany was designated as Delaware Township’s District 1, the town eventually operated its own, separate, school system.

Eden Church’s sidewalk to righteousness in Delaware County

“In all thy ways acknowledge him,” directs Proverbs 3:6 in the King James Bible, “and he shall direct thy paths.” A narrow, concrete lane that spans nearly a third of a mile in rural Delaware County proves that members of the Eden United Church of Christ took their verses to heart: Around 1907, the church built a sidewalk to connect the nearest interurban stop to the congregation’s brand-new sanctuary.

An old path out of town: Albany’s interurban infrastructure

Two weeks shy of a year ago, I drove up to Albany, Indiana in northeastern Delaware County to take photos of a couple of old schoolhouses there. I drove southeast on Eaton-Albany Pike -the old road that connects those two communities- and came across something mysterious.
